Goa remained the capital of Portuguese India until 1961 and was the center of spreading Catholicism in the country. As the trade flourished and a large fragment of the Goan population was made to follow Christianity, the churches and convents of Goa became a significant part of the culture. These monuments were included in the UNESCO heritage list in 1986. While information on these heritage monuments is available everywhere, let us take this opportunity to showcase their beauty through pictures.
1. Basilica of Bom Jesus
One of the oldest churches of Goa, the Basilica of Bom Jesus lies in the heart of Old Goa. Among the most popular churches and convents of Goa, this Roman Catholic church holds the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier.

P.S- There is no dress code for the church. Photography is allowed everywhere except for the main altar and the underground interactive exhibition. The entry fee for the latter is Rs 20 only. Entry to the main church is free.
Timing– 9 am to 6.30 pm on weekdays. Sundays it remains open between 10.30 am and 6.30 pm.
2. SE Cathedral
Right opposite the Basilica of Bom Jesus, is the white building named SE Cathedral. Dedicated to Saint Catherine, Cathedral was built to commemorate the victory of the Portuguese over a Muslim army, leading to the capture of Goa in 1510.

P.S- You should be modestly dressed to enter the cathedral. Travelers wearing sleeveless, hats, caps, indecent graphics or prints are not allowed to enter the cathedral.
Timing– Monday to Saturday -9 am to 5 pm. Sunday- 11 am to 3 pm (2nd Sunday 12 pm to 3 pm)
3. St Augustine Church
This is called the tower of Saint Augustine Church. It was built by the Augustinian friars who arrived in Goa in 1587. Unfortunately, the church was abandoned, and neglect slowly led to its collapse.

P.S.- The entire church premise is in ruins and disrepair. Please do not climb over or sit on the boundary walls and pillars as they are fragile.
Timing– 9 am to 5 pm every day. No entry fee.
There are more such churches in Goa of historical and religious importance. These are the three most popular ones and are a part of the UNESCO World Heritage list in India. If offbeat places of Goa interest you, head to these places and you will not be disappointed.
